The City of Lake Forest, Illinois

When people think of northern Illinois, the City of Chicago most often comes to mind. But north of the big city is an area of pristine land and stately homes collectively referred to as the North Shore. The City of Lake Forest is located in Lake County, Illinois along the shore of Lake Michigan. The city was founded in 1857 together with Lake Forest College. There are two Metra rail lines that connect Lake Forest to Chicago and Milwaukee and it is a short 30-minute ride to O’Hare International Airport. It is also home to the Wildlife Discovery Center which is located alongside a 670-acre wildlife habitat. The center functions both as an accredited biological field station (OBFS) and a living museum.

Lake Forest Sailing is one of the best sailing programs in the country and has courses available for all ability levels. Deerpath Golf Course has been a part of the Lake Forest community for over 90 years and offers a pristine course experience as well as top-notch instruction.

There is a state-of-the-art Fitness Center with special rates for Lake Forest residents. There are martial arts classes for all ages and a number of youth athletic opportunities as well as an array of other programming for the little ones. And speaking of children, Lake Forest offers both public and private schools that are considered to be among the best in the Midwest.

Performing arts opportunities are endless for both participants and spectators. Lake Forest is home to the Deer Path Art League, the Music Institute of Chicago Lake Forest Campus, the Lake Forest Symphony, and Citadel Theatre. The city’s rich cultural heritage includes a tradition of celebrated artists, writers, painters, filmmakers, actors, and more. From open mic nights to concerts to theatre, there is something for everyone to enjoy. There are community events such as a Sidewalk Sale, regular Garden Market, and Oktoberfest. Lake Forest also provides special offerings for senior residents.
